What is a sit spot?
A sit spot is a dedicated place in nature (or near an outdoor green element) that you visit regularly to sit quietly, listen, observe, and down-regulate your nervous system. Rather than hiking or exercising, you remain still in one spot for 5–10 minutes, allowing your body to calibrate to the surrounding living environment.
Do I need to go into a forest? What if I live in a city?
No wilderness is required. A park bench, neighborhood street tree, backyard garden, balcony chair, or even an apartment window overlooking greenery works effectively. Research shows that your nervous system responds to micro-cues of living nature—sky, birdsong, breeze, and foliage—in urban and suburban settings alike.
Is this a meditation app?
No. Sit Spot Club is not an inward-looking meditation app and does not require clearing your mind or monitoring your breath. It is an outward-facing attention practice grounded in evolutionary biology and nature therapy. The daily prompts invite sensory curiosity about what is alive and happening around you.
What if the weather is cold, wet, or rainy?
We encourage sitting in all weather with suitable gear (warm layers, an umbrella, and a waterproof sit pad). Noticing seasonal shifts and changing weather patterns is a fundamental part of the practice. If severe conditions create a safety risk, sitting indoors beside an open window is a great alternative.
How long are the daily sessions?
Each daily practice is approximately 10 minutes. Research conducted by Dr. Tara Tiger Brown demonstrates that short, repeated exposures outperform infrequent long sessions for lowering cortisol, restoring attention, and establishing lasting habits.
What if I don't know where to sit?
We built an interactive Sit Spot Finder tool that walks you through five simple criteria—proximity, comfort, safety, sensory diversity, and edge shelter—to help you find your ideal spot within a few minutes of your front door.
